Hon Ngu is an island in the Gulf of Tonkin, administratively part of Nghi Huong quarter in Cua Lo ward, more than 4 kilometres from the shore. It is made up of two islets: the larger rises 133 metres and the smaller 88 metres above the sea, with a total area of only about 2.5 square kilometres and a weather station on the highest point. Wild animals such as civets, monitor lizards, goats and monkeys live on the island, most of them released by the Nghe An forest protection department after being seized from smugglers at the border. Fishing is banned within one nautical mile of the island, so the surrounding waters are rich in seafood, especially a prized local sea snail. Seen from the mainland, the two islets form the backdrop to Cua Lo beach.
