Binh Son Tower, also known as the Vinh Khanh pagoda tower or Then tower, is an ancient Tran dynasty tower in the grounds of Vinh Khanh pagoda, Binh Son hamlet, Tam Son commune. It is said to have had 13 storeys originally; today 11 storeys and a base remain because the top has broken off, standing 16.5 metres tall. It is the tallest surviving terracotta tower of the Tran period, typical of Ly and Tran pagoda architecture, and has been ranked a special national relic. Its square plan narrows towards the top, from 4.45 metres per side at the bottom to 1.55 metres at the eleventh storey, and it is built of about 13,200 fired bricks shaped to lock into one another. The outside is faced with square tiles richly decorated; the finest work runs from the base to the second storey, with rows of chrysanthemums, lotus petals, bodhi leaves, relief dragons and lions playing with a ball, while decoration thins out on the upper levels.
