Tam Dao National Park lies entirely on the Tam Dao range, a ridge more than 80 kilometres long and 10 to 15 kilometres wide running north west to south east across Phu Tho, Thai Nguyen and Tuyen Quang provinces, about 75 kilometres north of Hanoi. The Tam Dao protected forest was recognised in 1977, and the national park was established on 15 May 1996. The range has more than 20 peaks above 1,000 metres, the highest being Tam Dao North at 1,592 metres, with sharp summits and very steep slopes. The park covers 34,995 hectares and holds 1,282 species of higher plants, 42 of them endemic, such as the Tam Dao dendrobium orchid and the Tam Dao golden camellia. It is home to 239 bird species and 64 mammal species; of its 39 endemic animals, 11 are found only at Tam Dao, such as the Tam Dao newt.
