Nga Bay floating market formed in 1915 at the point where seven river branches meet: Cai Con, Mang Ca, Bung Tau, Soc Trang, Xeo Mon, Lai Hieu and Xeo Vong, the result of a canal digging effort that ran for ten years. Boats gather to sell orchard fruit such as rambutan, mangosteen and durian, along with vegetables, handicrafts, poultry and seafood, and there is even a snake market and sampans serving breakfast on the water. In 2002 the market was moved to Ba Ngan on the Cai Con River more than three kilometres away, but the new site was poorly received and by late 2006 it had returned to its original spot. The market appears in the classic song Tinh anh ban chieu and the ocean explorer Jacques Cousteau once called it a floating market unique in the world.
