Hoang A Tuong Palace, also called the castle of Hoang Yen Tchao, is a historic building put up by Hoang Yen Tchao in Bac Ha commune. Work began in 1914 and finished in 1921, and his family lived here until 1950. The whole estate covers 10,000 square metres and is regarded as a refined blend of Asian and European architecture, a clear meeting of Eastern and Western cultures. It stands close to the Bac Na river, about 70 kilometres from the former Lao Cai city centre; the road in leaves National Route 70 at the Coc Xam junction and follows provincial road 153 for about 25 kilometres to the north north east. On 11 June 1999 the Ministry of Culture ranked it a national relic.
