But Thap Pagoda stands on the south bank of the Duong River. It is thought to date from the reign of Tran Thanh Tong, although no document fixes the year. Its present form comes from a major rebuilding completed in 1647 under the patronage of Queen Mother Trinh Thi Ngoc Truc. The pagoda is famous for its seventeenth century thousand armed, thousand eyed Avalokitesvara, considered the largest wooden statue in Vietnam and named a national treasure in the first round of designations in 2012. The grounds also hold the stone Bao Nghiem tower, 13.05 metres high in five storeys. The pagoda was ranked a special national relic on 9 December 2013 under Decision 2383.
