Dau Pagoda is regarded as the oldest pagoda in Vietnam and the earliest centre of Buddhism in the country. Work began in 187 and finished in 226, in the Luy Lau area where Indian monks arrived very early. In the late sixth century the monk Vinitaruci came here and founded the first Zen lineage in Vietnam. The Hoa Phong tower in the courtyard is built of large fired brick; it once had nine storeys but only three remain, standing about 17 metres high on a square base roughly 7 metres to a side. The pagoda was heavily rebuilt in 1313 and repaired many times since, and has been ranked a national relic since 28 April 1962.
